The department of science and Humanities was commissioned in 2004 at RVS College of Engineering and Technology. This department comprises of Applied Physics, Applied Chemistry, Applied Mathematics and Communicative English with language lab.
Applied Physics Lab
The technological development has always been the result of combined efforts of Physicists and Engineers. A perfect knowledge of the physics is required for the further study of engineering. The department provides the theoretical and practical aspects of physics. It consists of some major equipment such as spectrometer, Newton’s interferometer, De-Sauty’s Bridge, Potentiometer, Viscosity apparatus etc. The department also comprises of Optics lab established with proper darkroom and modern facilities. The experiments related to heat, current, electricity and sound are being performed as per AICTE norms.
Applied Chemistry Lab
Chemistry has always been the part and parcel of an engineering study. Chemistry caters the supplement for all the technical branches including civil, chemical as well as metallurgical engineering department. This department comprises of Chemistry Laboratory with important chemical equipments such as water distillation plant, oven, viscosity apparatus, flash and fire point analyzer, fuel gas analyzer, etc. It also consists of digital pH meter, conductivity meter and weight balance. The department has got all the facilities for research work.
Engineering mathematics is a specific branch of applied mathematics in which various well-known mathematical techniques are utilized to facilitate students to study technology.
A physical phenomenon is transformed into a problem of mathematical modeling and its solution is achieved by applying tools of mathematics. Some of the well–known and widely used mathematical techniques are differential equations, integral transforms, numerical methods, complex analysis, operations research, discrete mathematics and many other methods.
The understanding of calculus is indispensable in the applied field and so students are advised to have a sound background of the nature of functions, notion of limits, continuity, and differentiability. The graphical study of trigonometric, exponential, logarithmic, and hyperbolic functions help them in gaining mastery over calculus and its derivatives.
The students are given the basic ideas and fundamentals of these core topics in the beginning semesters so as to make them able to march ahead in the field of technology.
English is used as a common communicative language across the globe, particularly in the multi-national industries. Our budding engineers essentially need communicative skills so that they can interact properly with others at their work place in their professional career. Here in RVSCET, practical courses for this purpose are designed to meet the basic needs of communicative competence on students’ part. Our faculty members develop in students how to speak and right grammatically accepted form of English language. Apart from the basics of the language, they are given ear training which helps them to understand even when the non-native speakers speak. For the sophisticated use of language, students have to undergo some classroom activities e.g. elocution, debate, paper presentation, oral presentation, group discussion, panel discussion and mock interviews. To add sophistication to their communicative competence, we have a language lab for their use and it plays a very pivotal role in their language development.
RVSCET has adopted the latest techniques and theories in teaching with special stress on improving the communication skills of its students. And to achieve this RVSCET has established a modern language lab which offers the following:
- Text, images, audio and video can easily be integrated and the teachers can alter materials to fit their requirements.
- Learners can record their own voice and play back the recordings, interact with each other, with the teacher and store results.
- Teachers can intervene and control the learners’ computers via the teacher’s console, track of learners’ work, etc.
- Self-access for independent learning which includes access to resources outside class.
The purpose of RVSCET in establishing a language lab is to involve students to actively participate in language learning exercises and get more practice than otherwise possible in a traditional classroom environment. With a language lab, all students in the class can speak simultaneously without distracting each other regardless of the class size. Without a language lab, in a class of more than 10 students, each student gets less time for speaking practice.
The language lab at RVSCET has 30 computers which will be raised to 60 in near future. Software used in language lab is Sanako Study, one of the best software available.
